BHN 400 is an abrasion-resistant steel with the normal hardness of 400 how. It is an all-around wear resistant steel. Due to its high toughness, good bendability and weldability, this steel can be used in structures with moderate wear. Abrasion Resistant (AR) steel plate is typically made in the as-rolled condition. These types/grades of steel plate products have been developed specifically for long service life in harsh conditions. AR products are suitable for a variety of applications in areas such as mining/quarrying, conveyors, loader buckets, wearing parts of agricultural machines, bulldozers blades, line pans, Tipper bodies, material handling and construction, and earthmoving.
Many steel plate manufacturers produce their own brand of abrasion resistant steel and these are usually distinguished by a brand name followed by the hardness of the steel which is measured in Brinell units. This range of steel plate products has been developed specifically for long service life in abrasive conditions. The steel is quenched which provides wear resistance; in order to improve hardness, it may also be tempered. Lower HB's generally provide good cold bending properties and good weldability. Weldability is not generally reduced as the hardness increases.
