This specification covers high-strength, low-alloy structural steel shapes, plates and bars for welded, riveted or bolted construction with atmospheric corrosion resistance. Heat analysis shall be performed wherein the low-alloy structural steel materials shall conform to the required chemical composition for carbon, manganese, phosphorous, sulfur, silicon, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, copper, vanadium, and columbium. Steel samples shall also undergo the tensile test and conform to required values of tensile strength, yield point and elongation.

COR-TEN A is a weathering steel and was developed to avoid having to paint steel for protection. This means that it has increased resistance to atmospheric corrosion when compared to unalloyed steels. Our IRSM 41-97 achieves this by forming a protective rust-coloured oxide layer on its surface. Its alloying with copper and chromium ensure the formation of a firmly adhering protective layer of 'rust' which delivers a particular aesthetic appearance and weathering performance. COR-TEN STEEL is not rustproof in itself. ASTM A242 TYPE 1 steel plates do not require them to be painted to be protected from tarnishing. The corrosion impeding impact of the defensive layer is delivered by the specific appropriation and centralization of alloying components in it. The layer ensuring the surface creates and recovers persistently when subjected to the impact of the climate. At the end of the day, the steel is permitted to rust keeping in mind the end goal to structure the "defensive" covering.
